AnkiWeb Companion - Chrome Extension · Last updated: September 28, 2026

What This Extension Does

AnkiWeb Companion shows AnkiWeb in a side pane and adds focus mode, keyboard shortcuts, themes, and optional local reminders and backups. Your cards stay in your AnkiWeb account. This extension is unofficial and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anki.

What Stays on This Browser

The extension stores these items in this browser, and nowhere else:

• Appearance, focus, shortcut, and reminder preferences
• Whether onboarding is finished
• The AnkiWeb email and password you type to sign in
• The last AnkiWeb path you visited, without query strings or login tokens
• Up to eight deck names you clicked
• Reviews you answer in this pane, and notes you add here, in a safety log
• The id of a dedicated window, if you use that setting

A downloaded safety-log file is a copy you keep. It does not include your AnkiWeb password. Clear history removes the page and deck list. Clear local extension data also resets preferences, the safety log, the saved sign-in, and onboarding. Neither button changes AnkiWeb.

What Is Sent to AnkiWeb

The side pane loads AnkiWeb itself. The saved sign-in is sent to AnkiWeb when the pane signs you in, and when you press Back up or confirm a restore. A full backup downloads your collection from AnkiWeb to a file on this computer. Restore sends that file back to your AnkiWeb account, and only after you type REPLACE. The collection is not sent to any other server. The backup file does not contain the password.

What This Extension Does Not Do

• No analytics and no advertising requests
• No sale of user data
• No use of user data for credit, lending, or anything outside showing and backing up your AnkiWeb account
• No reading of browsing history
• No access to sites other than ankiweb.net and ankiuser.net
